Near Mannheim Castle, which houses the university and museum, is Schillerplatz. Where there is now a small park was the former National Theatre, which was destroyed in the Second World War. In 1782, Schiller’s „Robbers“ was premiered on this site. The Schiller Monument commemorates the poet.
Today, the square is one of the coolest places in the city centre. In hot summers, Schillerplatz is a retreat for city centre residents. A little island in everyday life!
In der Nähe des Mannheimer Schlosses, in dessen Räumen Universität und Museum untergebracht sind, befindet sich der Schillerplatz. Wo heute ein kleiner Park ist, stand das ehemalige Nationaltheater, das im zweiten Weltkrieg zerstört wurde. 1782 wurden an diesem Ort Schillers „Räuber“ uraufgeführt. Das Schillerdenkmal erinnert an den Dichter.
Heute ist der Platz einer der kühlsten Orte in der Innenstadt. In Hitzesommern ist der Schillerplatz ein Rückzugsort für Innenstadtbewohner*innen. Eine kleine Insel im Alltag!
